PADI Altitude Diver (Bali) Topics

Understanding how altitude affects diving
Recognizing and managing altitude-related illnesses

Divers often travel to high-altitude locations in order to dive in new and exciting places. However, it is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with diving at altitude.

There are a number of altitude-related illnesses that divers should be aware of, including:

– Acute mountain sickness (AMS)
– High-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE)
– High-altitude cerebral edema (HACE)

Divers who are planning to dive at altitude should take steps to minimize the risks associated with these illnesses. These steps include:

– Acclimatizing to the altitude gradually
– Avoiding strenuous activity for the first few days at altitude
– Drinking plenty of fluids
– Wearing warm clothing
– Monitoring for symptoms of AMS, HAPE, or HACE

If a diver does experience symptoms of AMS, HAPE, or HACE, it is important to descend to a lower altitude immediately. This is the only effective treatment for these conditions.

Use of supplemental oxygen for altitude diving

Using supplemental oxygen for altitude diving is an important safety measure to help prevent altitude sickness. Divers should always consult with their doctor before diving at high altitudes, and should use supplemental oxygen when diving at altitudes above 3,000 feet / 914 meters.

Use of decompression chambers for altitude diving

The use of decompression chambers for altitude diving is a widely accepted practice among experienced divers. By using a chamber, a diver can safely decompress from a greater depth than what is possible with surface decompression methods. This allows divers to safely dive to greater depths, without the risk of decompression sickness.

Chambers can also be used to provide a safe environment for a diver to decompress in if they are suffering from decompression sickness. By using a chamber, a diver can be treated for their condition and then safely brought back to the surface.

Decompression chambers are an important tool for altitude diving, and are a widely accepted practice among experienced divers.

Emergency procedures for altitude diving

‘-Determine the maximum allowed altitude for diving, using dive tables or dive computers
-Plan dives using dive tables or dive computers, taking into account the reduced partial pressure of oxygen at altitude
-Use dive tables or dive computers to safely ascend and descend from altitude dives
– employ emergency procedures for altitude diving, including the use of emergency oxygen
