Dive Theory

Semi-closed rebreather (SCR) diving is a type of rebreather diving where the rebreather has a constant flow of fresh gas, usually from an open-circuit scuba system, which mixes with the exhaled gas in the rebreather circuit. The mixture of fresh and exhaled gas is then breathed by the diver.

The main advantage of SCR diving is that it reduces the risk of carbon dioxide (CO2) build-up in the rebreather circuit, as the fresh gas constantly dilutes the exhaled gas. This makes SCR diving a safer option than closed-circuit rebreather (CCR) diving, where the exhaled gas is not diluted and CO2 build-up can occur.

SCR diving is also a more affordable option than CCR diving, as the rebreather equipment is less expensive.

The dangers of SCR diving

Deep diving with a semi-closed rebreather (SCR) can be extremely dangerous. The main dangers are hypoxia and carbon dioxide (CO2) toxicity.

Hypoxia is a condition in which the body is deprived of oxygen. This can happen if the SCR diver’s oxygen supply is depleted or if the SCR unit is not properly configured. CO2 toxicity can occur if the SCR unit is not properly ventilated. CO2 toxicity can cause dizziness, headaches, nausea, and even death.
